First handgun for home defense — landed on a Glock 19, did I do okay?

After about a year of going back and forth, I finally picked up a Glock 19 Gen 5 as my first handgun, mostly for home defense and to start learning to shoot properly. I went with it because everyone said it's reliable, parts and holsters are everywhere, and 9mm is affordable for practice. Range trip is this weekend and I've got a class booked next month. Anything I should know going in, or any beginner mistakes to avoid?

Good on you for booking a class before going crazy at the range. A few hours with a qualified instructor will save you months of building bad habits.
Congrats. One tip: get good defensive ammo (Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot) for the gun, but train with cheap FMJ. Run a box or two of your carry ammo through it to confirm it cycles.
Don't forget a way to store it safely if there are kids or visitors in the house. A quick-access biometric safe by the bed is worth every penny.
A weapon-mounted light or at least a good handheld is worth thinking about for home defense — you have to identify your target before anything else.
Solid choice, you really can't go wrong with a G19. Buy a few extra mags and a case of decent 9mm and just put rounds downrange. Reps matter way more than the gun.
