Woman new to carry — recoil management with defensive loads

I just got my permit and I'm working through which defensive load to carry in my compact 9mm. I shoot standard FMJ fine but the snappier defensive loads make my hands sting after a box and my splits slow way down. I don't want to compromise on a quality hollow point but I also need to actually control the gun under stress. Any advice on loads or technique that helped you tame the recoil without going down to a weaker round?

Don't underestimate how much grip texture and a proper fit matter. Sometimes the gun, not the ammo, is what's beating up your hands. Good for you for testing under realistic conditions.
Standard pressure defensive loads (not +P) will be noticeably softer and modern ones perform great. You don't need +P to be well armed.
124gr standard pressure tends to feel more like a push than the snappy lighter +P loads. Shoot a box of a few and pick what YOU control best. That's the whole game.
Try a few different standard-pressure quality hollow points. HST, Gold Dot, and Hornady all have loads that shoot soft for their class. Recoil feel varies more than people expect.
A lot of the sting is grip technique, not just the ammo. A high, firm, two-handed crush grip changes everything. Worth a lesson with a good instructor.
