Shotgun vs handgun vs AR for home defense — where I landed after a lot of thought

This debate gets heated but here's my honest take after running all three in classes. A 12 or 20 gauge with buckshot is devastating and intuitive, but follow-up shots and tight hallways are harder than people admit. A pistol-caliber carbine or short AR with a light is what I actually keep ready now because it's easy to shoot well under stress. Whatever you pick, the gun matters less than training, a light, and a plan for your specific home layout.

Agree on the light. You cannot shoot what you can't identify, full stop.
20 gauge is criminally underrated for home defense. Less recoil, plenty effective, easier for smaller-framed shooters.
I keep a shotgun but I'm the only adult and my layout is simple. Context really is everything here.
A plan and a way to call for help matter as much as the firearm. Don't go clearing your house like it's a video game.
Overpenetration is the part people skip. AR with the right ammo actually penetrates walls less than handgun rounds, surprises a lot of folks.
