Took my wife shooting for the first time and learned what NOT to do

I made the classic mistake of starting her on my .357 because I thought it'd be 'cool.' She flinched, hated it, and almost didn't want to come back. Second trip I started her on a .22 rifle, then a .22 pistol, and she had a blast and outshot me on the bullseye. If you're introducing someone, start small and let them build confidence before you hand them anything that barks.

Hearing protection matters double for new folks. Get good electronic muffs so they can still hear you coach. The blast is half of what scares people.
Glad she gave it a second chance. A lot of people don't, and that one bad first trip is it for them forever.
This should be pinned. The number of relationships and new shooters killed by handing someone a magnum or a 12 gauge as a 'joke' is too high.
Letting her outshoot you was the smartest thing you did, intentional or not. Nothing hooks a new shooter like a tight group they're proud of.
Same playbook with my teenagers. .22 first, every time. Cheap to shoot too so they can put rounds downrange without me wincing at the ammo bill.
