Do I really need a dedicated light AND a handheld flashlight, or is one enough?

Sorting out my home-defense thinking and I keep seeing the advice that you should have both a weapon-mounted light and a separate handheld. My instinct was that the WML covers it, but I've also read that you shouldn't point your muzzle at something just to identify it. That actually makes a lot of sense to me. For people running both, how do you actually use them together without it getting clumsy?

There are techniques (Harries, Surefire/FBI, etc) for running a handheld alongside a pistol. They feel awkward at first, get some reps in. But yes, two lights is the right answer.
This is exactly the reason for both. You use the handheld to search and identify (pointing a gun at your own family member to ID them is a hard no), and the WML is there for when the gun is already on a confirmed threat.
A handheld also covers you in a thousand non-shooting situations, dropped keys, power outage, walking the dog. A WML can't do any of that. Everyone should carry a handheld light regardless.
Handheld for investigating bumps in the night, WML for when you've already decided to present the firearm. Two tools, two jobs. Learn a technique to run both together for the in-between moments.
Glad the 'don't muzzle to identify' point clicked for you, that's the whole ballgame. So many people skip the handheld and it's arguably the more important of the two for legal/safety reasons.
