Started reloading to save money — here's the honest math after a year

Everyone says you don't actually save money reloading, you just shoot more, and after a year I can confirm that's mostly true but with nuance. My per-round cost on 9mm dropped meaningfully once I'd amortized the press, but I absolutely shoot way more than I used to so my total spend went up. Where it genuinely pays off is precision rifle and oddball calibers where factory ammo is expensive or scarce. If you're only shooting bulk 9mm to save a few cents, the time investment may not be worth it for you.

Precision rifle is where it clicked for me too. Tailoring a load to my barrel got me accuracy no factory ammo matched. That alone justified the whole setup.
For me the value is also self-sufficiency. During the last shortage I was loading while shelves were bare. Hard to put a price on that.
This is the most honest reloading post I've seen. The real savings are in rifle and weird calibers, not plinking 9mm.
The 'you just shoot more' thing is so true. My ammo budget didn't shrink, my round count tripled. But I got way better as a shooter, so worth it.
Don't forget the time cost is also a hobby in itself. I find loading relaxing, so I don't count the hours as a loss.
