Do I actually need +P for my carry gun?

New-ish carrier here. I run a compact 9mm and everyone online seems to insist on +P defensive loads, but the recoil makes my follow-up shots noticeably slower and my groups open up. I'd rather put two fast accurate hits with standard pressure than one flinchy +P hit. Am I missing something or is standard pressure HST/Gold Dot genuinely fine for defense?

Short answer: no, you don't need it. Good hits with a good bullet matter more than the +P stamp.
This. A standard pressure 124gr HST is a fantastic defensive round. +P buys you a little velocity and a lot more muzzle blast and recoil. Accuracy beats velocity every time.
Standard pressure modern 9mm hollow points are excellent. The FBI protocol loads most departments use are not exotic +P magic. Shoot what you control well.
One thing to check: make sure your carry gun actually cycles reliably with whatever you pick, and shoot at least a box of your exact carry load to confirm. Don't carry something you've only shot 5 rounds of.
I carried +P for years out of internet peer pressure then switched to standard pressure Gold Dot and shoot way better. No regrets.
