Onx and the official BLM maps are your friends. But call the local BLM field office, they'll tell you exactly which areas are open for target shooting and which are closed.
Whatever you do, pack out every piece of brass, every target, and every shred of trash. The reason a lot of public land gets closed to shooting is slobs leaving the place trashed. Don't be that guy.
Free Roam and onX both have public land layers. Cross reference with the field office and you're golden.
Rules vary by district even within BLM. Some areas are open, some near towns are closed, and fire restrictions change things seasonally. Always check current restrictions before you go.
Never shoot at glass, appliances, or anything you have to leave behind. Steel and paper with a proper backstop only. A natural dirt berm is your best friend.
