Buying a pistol while having an out-of-state driver's license - can I?

I just moved for grad school and haven't switched my driver's license to the new state yet. I want to buy a handgun from a local shop here. The clerk seemed unsure whether my old-state license is a problem. What documentation actually establishes residency for a handgun purchase if your license is still from somewhere else?

Honestly, just go switch your license now that you live there. It solves this and a dozen other future headaches.
You can typically supplement with proof of residency, like a lease, utility bill, or similar government doc showing your current address. Bring a stack of those.
Long guns are more lenient on residency than handguns, FYI. But for a pistol, get your residency documentation in order first.
Handgun purchases require you to be a resident of the state where you buy. Your license is the easy proof, but it's not the only one.
Some shops are stricter than the law requires and just want a matching in-state license to keep it simple. Different dealer might be more flexible.
