Brass vs steel case — settled this for myself after 2000 rounds each

I kept seeing the same arguments so I ran a little experiment in my AR over the last year: roughly 2000 rounds of cheap steel case and 2000 of brass. The steel ran fine but I noticed more carbon fouling and my extractor looked rougher at the end. For a gun I actually care about I'm sticking with brass now, but for a beater AK-pattern rifle I'd shoot steel all day without a second thought. Just my two cents, not gospel.

Counterpoint: I've run steel through my AR for years with zero issues. I think a lot of the steel hate is overblown. But you do you.
Reloadability is the kicker for me. Once you reload, brass is basically free after the first firing.
This matches my experience. Steel is fine in guns designed around it. In a tight-chamber AR you can get sticky extraction as things heat up.
The lacquer/polymer coating melting in a hot chamber is the real culprit on extraction issues, not the steel itself. Still, brass is reloadable and steel isn't, so for me brass wins on principle.
Appreciate you actually putting rounds downrange instead of just repeating forum lore. The extractor wear point is the one that convinced me to mostly shoot brass.
