Chrono showed my factory match ammo has a huge ES — should I be worried?

Took my new chronograph out with a box of premium factory match .308 and saw an extreme spread of nearly 60 fps over ten rounds, which seems high for ammo marketed as match grade. My groups at 100 looked fine but I'm planning some longer range stuff and I know velocity spread really hurts at distance. Is 60 fps ES normal for factory match, or did I get a bad lot, or is my chrono just lying to me?

Try a magnetospeed or a doppler-style unit before condemning the lot. I've seen optical chronos report wild numbers in bad light.
Sample of ten is small. Shoot more before drawing conclusions. But yeah, this is exactly why precision shooters reload.
Before blaming the ammo, check your chrono setup. Lighting, distance from the muzzle, and screen alignment can throw garbage numbers. Optical chronos especially.
60 fps ES on factory match isn't great but it's not unheard of either. Factory ammo just can't match careful handloads for consistency. Hand loaders chase single-digit ES for a reason.
At 100 yards 60 fps won't show. At 800+ it absolutely will in vertical dispersion. If long range is your goal, this is the argument for reloading.
