Lighter standalone plates are way more livable than the heavy stuff. If you buy, don't go bargain-basement on the plates themselves, that's the one part you can't cheap out on.
Not overkill if it's part of a thought-out plan and you've already covered training and medical. Overkill if it's the first big purchase. Sounds like you already know that.
Honestly for the money a carrier costs, a couple of good low-light classes will save your life more reliably than a plate. But it's your money and it's not an unreasonable prep once the basics are handled.
If you do get one, set it up to also hold spare mags and your IFAK so it's a grab-and-go defensive package, not just armor. That makes it earn its place.
Priority order in my opinion: training, a reliable gun, a weapon light, a med kit, THEN consider armor. A carrier is low on the list but not crazy if the fundamentals are already covered.
