Easiest and safest: meet at an FFL and have them run the transfer even if your state doesn't require it. Costs a little, removes all doubt.
Check your state's rules, some require background checks on private sales now. If yours does, that decides it for you.
I always do FFL transfers for private sales. If that gun is ever used in a crime, I have proof it left my hands through a check. Cheap insurance.
At minimum, verify they're a resident with a valid in-state ID and have them confirm in writing they're legally allowed to own firearms. A simple bill of sale with their info is smart.
Trust your gut too. If a buyer is cagey about ID or wants to meet somewhere weird with cash and no paper, walk away.
